Sunset Over Abendau
The Inheritance Trilogy Book 2
By, Jo Zebedee
By the time I had read the Prologue and Chapter One, I knew I was reading something special. And it just gets better from there!
It has been ten long years since the events recorded in Abendau’s Heir. Kare has assumed power. His mother has been stripped of her dignity and all else – except her determination! Lines have been drawn, personal roles established – and many are taking their destinies into their own hands.
Zebedee’s characters are real! They have depth. They have hopes, fears and dreams she makes you feel. These aren’t your average cookie-cutter characters, and you’re never sure they’ll succeed in the end (unlike the characters in a couple of well-known series, which shall remain nameless, with their perfect heroes and distinguishable villains all warring against their enemies as they trek through space).
And the actions of these characters have real consequences. Their worlds are not perfect and neither are they, but neither are they hopelessly lost.
In other words, this is some of the best characterizations I’ve seen in a millennium: Thank you, Jo!
Zebedee has created an extraordinary, yet believable, Universe. She does an excellent job describing its wonders – and its faults – without getting either too flowery or morbid. It’s a universe full of diversity, and one that causes us fans of space operas to scream Yes, Yes! If you don’t enjoy Zebedee’s vision, you don’t like Science Fiction.
There are some great action scenes one just can’t help but want to see on the Big Screen. When Bomack jumped for the grapplers on the underbelly of the transport headed to Abendau, I found myself hoping they’d use a stuntman in the movie, rather than CGI!
The ending chapters of this book are a thrill ride you just can’t miss! There was so much happening, I’ll have to read them again before taking on Book 3! Which is fine, seeing as I really enjoyed them!
The last chapter of Sunset Over Abendau does exactly what last chapters in a series should do; it wraps up things in this installment, and leaves you hungry for the next! Things have changed – a lot of things. And not all for the ‘good’ (which is a word that would have several different interpretations from the characters in this story).
Complex characters. A thrilling storyline. An exotic, well thought-out Universe. A series that screams to one day be put on the big-screen.
I proudly hand out my first 10 out of 10 in a very long time!
