Kingdom Asunder

This well-written epic is about treachery, personalities, and pending war.  It is about greed, desire, and the lust for power.

A ruling family, decimated of its strong males “by misfortune and war”, has only a meek, stuttering cousin left, as heir to the throne.

The king and his entourage are attacked on the highway, and the king left in critical condition.

It is revealed that the King’s Regent, who took the position when the King, William, was but seven, is behind the assault, not wanting to give up his position, now the King has reached his maturity.  In the following section, Lady Sophie Hurstwood, promised to the young King, is kidnapped, her men slaughtered, to be a pawn in trying to secure her father’s support for the Regent’s insurrection.

This is how such things take place.  A lot of plotting and planning, backstabbing and intrigue.  The faithful, and those whose support comes at a price.  By the end of the second section, the lines are drawn and explained.

Quite frankly, the story is geniusly revealed and told.  The action keeps an uneven pace, because the story reveals both what’s happening, and what’s going on behind the action scenes.  And always, the story keeps your interest.

The ending of this book is superb.  I was gladdened to know that some lies… are for the good.

In short, this book is a well-written story, placed in a well-designed and believable world, with characters one can easily love and hate.  I can’t wait for the next one!

I rate this novel 9 out of 10.
