Cathbad Maponus Interview

AN INTERVIEW OF:  Cathbad Maponus

CONDUCTED ON:  January 25, 2017

What genres do you write in, and which is your favorite?

I write Fantasy (usually Epic Fantasy), Science-Fiction, Horror and Mystery.

At what age did you start writing?  Where were you?

I was about 8.  I wrote it in school, at Lincoln Grade School.

Do you self-publish, use an Indie Publisher, or a Mainstream Publisher?

I self-publish, using my own Indie Publishing Company, Prince Publications.

Do you recall your first story (describe)?

It was a horror story, though I don’t recall the storyline.

Who are your favorite authors/authors that inspired you?

Tolkein, Christie, King, Jordan

What sort of things inspire your work?

I read mysteries to get inspired.  I don’t know why, but it works, no matter what genre I’m currently writing in!  I am also inspired by walks in the woods, watching nature programs.

Can you describe your writing process?

I start with an idea in my head, then start writing.  When I know where the characters are leading me, I take the time to write an outline (if it’s a novel).  Then I listen to the characters and go for it!

Where have you found the best advice concerning your writing?

From writer’s boards, watching/participating in the discussions there.  I also listen to my first readers.

What was your most recent work (include a synopsis)?

“Darganau:  Autobiography of a Dragon”.  It’s the tale of the first third of the life of a dragon, told by the dragon himself!  It’s based on an NPC from my Dungeon and Dragon campaigns of years gone by.

If different, what is your favorite work of your own and why (include a synopsis)?

“Flight of the Elves”.  A leader of the Mountain Elf Clans’ militias is the lone survivor of a battle fought and lost against the Plains Elves.  When they send a cavalry to finish off her Clans, she races to save the Mountain Elves, leading them up the mountain to a more defensible plateau.  Along the way, the Elves must deal with a traitorous Clan, a powerful Undead Wizard, and dragons!

What is your current WIP (Work In Progress) (include as much detail as you wish)?

“Darganau:  World Dominion”  The sequel to my most recent work (above).  Tells the tale of the middle portion of Darganau’s life, including his involvement in the War of the Continents, and his dealings with some of his most powerful enemies and allies!

(You may list other works of yours here, with short synopses of 30 words or less, please.)

“One World”, a short story in Inkling Press’s Tales of Alternate Earths.  An alternate history scenario involving President Kennedy and the Cuban Missile Crisis.

“Dead Space”, a story in the e-mag 9Tales Told in the Dark #19.  It’s all about ghosts – and their need of a ship.

“Stories of the Elves of Kali”, Volumes 1 and 2.  Short story collections; tales from the Mountain Elf Clans of the novel “Flight of the Elves”.

“The Shen (Elven) Language Guide”, a companion to the Mountain Elves of Kali series.

What advice can you give other writers?

Write!  Read all you can, converse with other writers, and WRITE!  You’ll only get better!

What advice would you like from other writers?

All I can get!

Is there anything else about your writing career you would like to share?

Just that I’m writing several stories at once right now, and I’ll get the best ones I can out eventually!  J

NOW LET’S GET PERSONAL:

What/Who do you read for pleasure?

Carolyn Hart (writes in the manner of Agatha Christie) is my current favorite.  Also read Lisa Gardner, Sanderson, and a few others.

What other things do you do for fun?

Watch television/movies, shop.

Do you wish to share your non-writing employment (if any)?

I’ve stopped working, since my stroke in 2014.

Where do you live (detailed, or just a part of the world)?

Georgia, USA (though I still consider Florida my home).

How about your family?

I’m a 60-year-old bachelor.  J

Is there anything else you would like to share with your adoring fans?

Just that I appreciate them, and I would appreciate some feedback, in the form of reviews!

Thank you for participating in our on-line interview!
